Egypt at High

So I recently went to the exhibit on Ancient Egypt at the High. It was pretty good, but short and with too much pottery. You can only see so many jugs before you get a little bored. However, there are two sarcophogi (sarcophogus'? not sure on the plural of that) that are really cool. Not sure if anyone was home in there or not, but somehow I doubt it. And a cute teeny-tiny kitten mummy. You also get admission (I think because it's so short) to an exhibit called African Gold that was really interesting. All sorts of African tribal jewelry, shoes, objects, etc etc all made out of gold. Most of them are formed to represent some sort of parable, which I'd have to say was fascinating and some pretty funny. Lots of photos on the walls as well, which was also interesting. Anyone else see it? What did you think?
Incidentally, they have Van Gogh coming in the fall as part of a larger exhibit. I'm there!

I have been meaning to get over there for that. BTW, Emory's Carlos Museum has a lot of really fascinating art as well. I think it's a $5 donation.

I agree w/ Smoooochie, the Carlos Museum is very cool and I also think that it is in some ways better than the High when it comes to presenting a new exhibit. In fact I saw an Egyptian exhibit there years ago that was pretty impressive.

Thanks for posting the review, Muse, I enjoyed reading it! I don't think I'm interested in seeing this show at the High, but the Van Gogh thing sounds very tempting. I wonder if it's possible to get tickets for something like that far ahead of time.

Speaking of art displays, I saw the Chihuly (sp?) show at the Botanical Gardens and liked a lot of it. The very large spiny peices outside were not as appealing, I thought, as the smaller things inside the greenhouse that were nicely intermingled with the plants.

My son and I saw the *Ramses* mummy at the Carlos museum before it was returned to Egypt. That was one jam-packed little exhibit there:

    news.nationalgeographic.com/news....html

I wrote the following ode to commemorate the event:

    An archeologist uncovered King Tut.
Ancient aromas arose from his butt.
As the smell of dead asp
    made the scientist gasp
    Tut slammed his sarcophogus shut!

    (Watch out Robert Frost!)

We'll probably check out the exhibit at the High, even if it is puny, 'cause my kid likes all things Egyptian.

You'll have to tell me if you thought it was short. I saw the exhibit on Paris in the age of Art Nouveau (maybe a year ago?), and that seemed to go on and on forever. That was a huge production though, there was a big line when we went. So maybe for a standard exhibit it's normal size. I'm really interested in ancient Egypt as well, and I just wasn't as "wowed" as I thought I would be.

Hey dote, check this out for your son:

        www.guardians.net

Parts of it don't work, but it has very cool "CyberJourneys" to different sites, the pyramids at Giza, Saqqara, etc. Sort of like the "Which-Way Secret Door" books, it shows photos of the sites then you click on which direction you want to explore next. And there's a "Kids Section" with a TON of links. However, I have to say that the link most appealing to me - "The Tomb of the Chihuahua Pharaohs" - doesn't work. :(
Wait, found it...(read that the creator caught heat from schools and had to make it more correct and educational)

I've always wondered if there would be an uproar if Egyptian archaeologists came over here, dug up the tombs of old presidents, and took them over to be displayed in Cairo.

      They can have Jimmy Carter.
      • Carter.

FYI Carter pretty much enjoys a status of local hero in Atlanta. This kind of attack at their hometown saint will get you in trouble real bad with the good old boys here.

          True that.

Knowing some of the people around here I wouldn't be surprised if they pull a Lenin and use secret techniques to preserve his body for display.

With all the technology of the past few years they might even to get body's to hold up better now.

Maybe, we can get a mummy exchange program started. Who could we, as Georgians offer and who would we trade for?

Incidentally, did anyone ever even read my post forever ago about encountering Jimmah in Victoria's Secret around Valentine's Day? Very funny story, got no comment. Don't know about you, but that was the last person I expected to see there.

And by the way, did you know that he believes in aliens? I think he saw one at some point or something. Seriously. I saw him speak a few years ago at Emory and a student asked him about it.

(And USDJohn your Nixon joke cracked me up!)

I am not that surprised. He may be a baptist but he is also a Manuel's regular which is a sign he has some taste for good things.

Oddly enough, when i said they could take Carter, it didn't even cross my mind that he's from Georgia. I was mainly referring to the fact that he looks and talks like the walking dead.
